From One Side to Another examines the urban transformation of the brutalist housing complex Trstenik/Split 3 in the Croatian city of Split. Conceived in the 1960s and 1970s as a socialist model city for 50,000 residents, the area today exemplifies the consequences of economic and political upheavals.
Following the breakup of Yugoslavia and the restitution of public open spaces to former owners, the original architectural vision has been increasingly undermined—through unplanned new constructions, neglected vacant lots, and informal parking areas.
Julia Gaisbacher, who grew up in a similar housing model in Graz (AT), approaches this development between 2021 and 2025 through close observation of urban space, making ruptures, transitions, and overlaps visible. Her work reveals how socio-political changes inscribe themselves into the built environment and where traces of former utopian ideas emerge under conditions of capitalist transformation.
