The starting point is always photography.Julia uses digital image files as raw material and experiments with printing processes, support materials, and, ultimately, installations. This allows her to combine two-dimensional images with three-dimensional objects. Depending on the project theme, she uses materials that she comes across during the research relating to the theme, place, or time. Her final works manifest in the forms of prints, installations, films and photobooks, with the latter having become an important part of her artistic practice.In 2021, the photo-text book One Day You Will Miss Me was published by Camera Austria and sequenced by Alejandro Cartagena.In 2023, Julia Gaisbacher's first photo book My Dreamhouse is Not a House was published by Berlin-based publisher The Velvet Cell and was sequenced and edited by Alejandro Cartagena and Fernando Gallegos. The book was nominated for four international photo book awards (PhotoEspaña, Les Rencontres Photographiques d' Arles, Germany's most Beautiful Books, Encontros da Imagem, Braga, Portugal). The book was also awarded the Bronze Medal of the German Photo Book Award 2023. In April 2025, her new photobook Hanne Darboven. Am Burgberg, was published by Hatje Cantz and was also nominated at Les Rencontres Photographiques d‘Arles in the same year. BIO Julia Gaisbacher lives and works in Vienna (AT).She studied Art History (M.A.) at the University of Graz (AT) and Three-Dimensional Work / Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden (DE) and LUCA School of Arts, Brussels (BE). She was a masters student of Prof. Martin Honert at the Academy of Fine Arts, Dresden. In 2017, she was nominated for the Plat(t)form, Fotomuseum Winterthur (CH) and in 2021, for the DZ Bank Art Collection (DE). Her awards include the Theodor Körner Fund Prize for Visual Arts (2021), a State Scholarship for Photography from the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria (2020), the Erste Bank ExtraVALUE Recognition Art Award (2018), and the Promotion Prize for Photography of the City of Graz (AT) (2016).In 2025, Julia Gaisbacher had a solo exhibition with „My Dreamhouse is not a House“ at the Foto/Industria Biennial, organised by Fondazione MAST and curated by Francesco Zanot in Bologna (IT). The five houses on the unique estate served as Darboven’s living and working space for 40 years. To this day, the ensemble also functions as a treasury for thousands of objects and artworks. Gaisbacher back to the Terrassenhaussiedlung (terrace housing estate) in Graz (AT) – the brutalist housing estate of the 1970s, where she grew up in the 1980s. Through current photographs, revisited places and images of the vacant apartment of the recently deceased architect Hermann Pichler – a member of the architectural group Werkgruppe Graz, the estate's architects, and a long-time resident – Julia weaves a narrative connecting personal memory and architectural history. The project examines how built spaces influence biographies and memories, how temporal and spatial distance affects these memories, and the relationship to these places. Conceived in the 1960s and 1970s as a socialist model city for 50,000 residents, the area today exemplifies the consequences of economic and political upheavals. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia and the restitution of public open spaces to former owners, the original architectural vision has been increasingly undermined—through unplanned new constructions, neglected vacant lots, and informal parking areas. Julia Gaisbacher, who grew up in a similar housing model in Graz (AT), approaches this development between 2021 and 2025 through close observation of urban space, making ruptures, transitions, and overlaps visible. Her work reveals how socio-political changes inscribe themselves into the built environment and where traces of former utopian ideas emerge under conditions of capitalist transformation. publicly funded participatory social housing projects in Austria from the 1970s. Huth developed a working method that allowed architects and future residents to collaborate on equal terms, resulting in single, occupant-designed houses within residential blocks. His projects were unique because no participatory approach was available outside the privately financed market in Austria at that time. About 50 years later, Julia Gaisbacher started an artistic research project observing the results of Eilfried Huth’s architectural experiment. In interviews, she asked residents how they had experienced the participatory planning process and its impacts on the long-term living quality in these built environments and combined them with archive material. project Belgrade Waterfront. Her photographs are at the heart of her spatial surveys and her sociocultural research.Alongside the comprehensive overview of Julia Gaisbacher’s photographs, the publication compiles five texts in German and English. not a House deals with the Gerlitzgründe in Graz (AT), one of the first Austrian publicly funded participatory social housing projects by architect Eilfried Huth from the 1970s. The working method he developed provided a form of collaboration where architects and prospective residents could meet on equal terms. The results from these processes were single, occupant-designed homes within residential blocks where strong communities and friendships came to develop. Seeking to universalize housing access, Huth reserved the first construction phase (30 units) of the Gerlitzgründe for low-income parents aged under 30. Nearly 50 years later, Julia Gaisbacher explored Huth’s experiment through artistic research, combining resident interviews, archival material, and visual documentation of the uniquely facades. The work is intended as a contemporary document of the potentially positive impact that architecture can have on society.
